Subrata
Chaudhuri is presently engaged as a Chair Professor in the
Department of Mining Engineering, Indian School of Mines. Before
joining academia, he served Indian coal sector for nearly four decades
in production, planning and in Ministry of Coal (Govt. of India), and
retired as CMD of CMPDI Ltd, a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd. Currently,
he is also a non-official part time Director in the Board of SAIL.
During the span of his service, he had been intimately associated for
about three decades with planning of a large number of coal mining
projects of CIL, visited coal mines and related establishments of
erstwhile USSR, USA, Canada, UK, China etc. and participated in
bilateral discussions on coal mining with different countries as a
member of Indian team. Between 2005 and 2007, he served as Chairman of
several important technical committees constituted by Ministry of Coal
and CIL and as Co-Chair of multi-nation Coal Sub-Committee of ‘Methane
to Market Partnership’ program under the auspices of USEPA. Shri
Chaudhuri has authored several technical papers and formulated ‘Vision
Coal 2025’ document in 2005 for Ministry of Coal.
A graduated in Mining Engineering from University of Calcutta and
post-graduate in Opencast Mining from Indian School of Mines, Shri
Chaudhuri holds the professional ‘First Class (Coal) Mine Managers’
Certificate of Competency’ issued by Ministry of Labour and Employment
(India) for managing coal mines. He is a Fellow of Institution of
Engineers (India) and a recognized qualified planner (RQP) in the panel
of Ministry of Coal, Government of India.
The areas covered by his expertise include, exploration of coal
deposits, master planning of coalfields, formulation techno-economic
feasibility report and environmental management plan for coal deposits,
mine closure planning, due diligence study of coal mining projects for
investment decision and mine disaster investigation.
