STANDARD
BUSINESS APPLICATIONS |

a. |
The
company has successfully
implemented standard business applications like Payroll, Personnel
Information System, Financial Accounting System, Cost Accounting
System, Materials management System, Sales Billing & Accounting
System, Road Sales System etc. |
|
|
b. |
During
the past two years, the
applications mentioned above have been gradually converted from legacy
flat files based system to Oracle RDBMS based systems. The conversion
has been completed for major applications in all the areas & a
small portion is under post implementation fine tuning. |
|
|
c. |
The
above applications were
designed to operate in batch mode. The company has taken steps to
modify & place them in On-Line operations mode so that the
concerned users can utilize the features from their place of working
and take full advantage of the systems. |
|
|
d. |
During
the recent past existing
batch mode Materials Management System has been implemented in On-Line
mode in 6 of the Area Stores where data connectivity could be
established. |
|
|
e. |
The
batch mode Financial
Accounting System has been modified & converted to On-Line mode at
Headquarters & three of the area offices (Kenda, Salanpur,
Pandveswar). |
|
|
f. |
The
Road Sales Module of the
Coalnet project of Coal India Limited has been implemented at ECL Sales
office Kolkata and is being successfully operated & maintained. |

B.

OFFICE
AUTOMATION |
|
|
a. |
The
company has provided about
650 PCs to various offices for routine Office Automation jobs like Word
Processing, Spreadsheet based Calculations etc. More nos. of PCs will
be gradually added to take care of demands due to reduction of clerical
hands, need for communicating using E-Mails, File & Data creation
and transfer etc. Some multifunction devices enabling Document
scanning, copying, printing & faxing have also been provided to
important offices. |

b. |
At
present important users have
been provided with Internet facility through various Service providers
(BSNL, Tata Indicom, Airtel etc.) through individual connections using
Broad Band, Dial-up or Wireless Modem connectivity. |
|
|
c. |
Official
E-Mail accounts have been
provided to the Directors, HODs & Area CGM/ GMs for inter
department communications. |
|
|
d. |
The
data transfer from various
Area Offices for consolidation at headquarters is gradually being
changed to E-Mail attachments instead of media transfer. |
|
|
e. |
Computer
Appreciation Training
is being provided on regular basis to the various segments of employees
to enable them to operate the Personal Computers provided in their
departments. This has greatly helped in generating enthusiasm among
employees for utilizing the Personal Computers. |

WEB-SITE
OF THE COMPANY |

The
company provides information for
dissemination to public on its web-site www.easterncoal.gov.in . |
|

|
The
Web-site has recently been given a
face lift and the available information have been made more presentable
& accessible. |

|
The
Web-site is being enriched on
feedbacks/ suggestions from various agencies. |
|

| D. |
E-GOVERNANCE
TYPE ACTIVITIES |
|
|
a. |
The
company is offering Coal for
sale through E-Auction taking help of the Service Providers. E-Auction
has proved to be beneficial in terms of fetching the right price of the
Coal as well as maintaining transparency in the activities. |

|
b. |
The
company has initiated action
for E-Procurement. Initially a few indents are being tendered on trial
basis using the facilities of the selected Service Provider. |

IMPORTANT
PROJECTS IN HAND |
|
|
a. |
Coal
India Limited has
formulated a strategy for Information Technology implementation in all
the subsidiaries of CIL. The strategy envisages Centralized Data Center
& ERP implementation up to Unit level through high speed Data
network. The activities of ERP evaluation, Selection of System
Integrator & finalization of technical specifications have
commenced at CIL. Eastern Coalfields Limited is committed to introduce
this IT strategy in the company as soon as it is ready for
implementation. |

b. |
The
company has taken steps for
extending On-Line Materials Management System to those Stores which are
remotely located and where cables could not be laid due to difficult
geographical terrain. A scheme was prepared for connecting these Stores
to the nearby Computer Center utilizing Wireless technology. The tender
for the job has been floated & is under technical evaluation. It
will be possible to start On-Line operations in seven (7) more stores
using the presently available software after establishment of this
network. |

In
order to implement On-Line
Financial Accounting System, action has been taken to establish Local
Area Network using basically Wireless technology at Kunustoria &
Jhanjhra. |
|
|
d. |
A project for Campus wide high
speed Local Area Network at Headquarters & two area offices with
interconnectivity has been undertaken. Services of CMPDI have been
taken for preparation of tender specifications. Upon establishment of
this project a secure network will be available for high speed Internet
access by all users through single gateway, introduction of File &
Document tracking, instant messaging among employees, dissemination of
information over Intranet, good infrastructure for E-Governance type of
activities and suitable infrastructure for ERP implementation. |

The
company has taken up a
project for implementation of Vigilance Information System in the
company. The work has been awarded to a software company after carrying
out necessary tendering process. |
